Pilot Program

Fall 2007

This fall, teachers at South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice and teaching artists will combine, or infuse, curriculum objectives and concepts with the study of artistic disciplines such as dance, drama and visual art. The overall infusion of the arts into the school's focus on law and social justice will offer a rich ground for teachers, artists and students to study and create.

"In law and social justice, we look at ethics, responsibility and equality," noted Celeste Miller, teaching artist and board member for the Atlanta Partnership for Arts in Learning. "The arts offer direct ways to experience these ideals in metaphor."

Focusing the curriculum on law and social justice will allow teachers and administrators to focus on ideas and issues relevant to student's lives and communities. This Pilot Program marks the first time the Atlanta Partnership for Arts in Learning will focus on making a deep impact on one school community through arts infusion.

"As a former teacher who collaborated with the Atlanta Partnership for Arts in Learning in the past, I was impressed by how arts infusion expanded my perspective on the curriculum and added relevance to my students' experiences," remarked Peter McKnight, principal of the South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice. "Now, as a principal, I am excited that all of our students will be able to experience the benefits of teams of teachers and artists in sustained collaboration around engaging interdisciplinary units."
